Marvel DC crossover

Are Marvel and DC planning a crossover event?

Note: Minor Spoilers ahead for Eternals

Marvel and DC are by far the two biggest comic book companies in the world. And although they have worked together in the past for comic book crossovers, we could now be about to see it on the big screen.

We’ve noticed some interesting clues recently that could be hinting at a potential crossover event between the two behemoths. Please note this is just fun speculation and nothing has been announced by either studio.

Eternals referencing Batman and Superman

Eternals Ikaris as Superman
Ikaris as Superman concept by @rahalarts

In Eternals fans are treated to more than one reference of DC Comics most famous characters, Batman and Superman.

When Gilgamesh first meets Kingo’s driver Karun he compares him to Alfred Pennyworth AKA Batman’s Butler. A not so subtle nod to the Dark Knight in a Marvel movie. It seems odd but I’m all for it.

The second reference comes when Phastos’ son meets Ikaris for the first time. He compares his powers to the Man of Steel and even directly mentions the name Superman. To which Ikaris replies ‘I don’t wear a cape’.

Both of these references to DC Comics most famous characters are very purposeful. They show that the DC Comics characters exist within the MCU. Which is wild. Who would have thought there would be the need for fictional comic book heroes like Batman and Superman in a world where real Superheroes exist?

The Director of Eternals, Chloe Zhao, was recently asked about the references and if she would like to see a crossover between Marvel and DC. This is what she had to say:

Who doesn’t? Of course I do, who doesn’t want to see that crossover? But we shouldn’t always get what we want. Maybe it’s not good for us (laughs). Maybe some things should be held back.

The next hint at a crossover comes from the DC side of the fence. Specifically from DC’s Black Adam, Dwayne ‘ The Rock’ Johnson.

While promoting his most recent movie Red Notice where the actor stars along side Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Johnson was asked about a potential crossover between Black Adam and WonderWoman. The answer he gave was better than anyone expected:

I think there’s a crossover with Black Adam, Wonder Woman. What we were just talking about today was, I turned to Ryan and Gal and I said, there should be a crossover Marvel and DC Universe. We can be the ones to possibly make it happen. So we’ll see, we’ll see what happens down the road.

Kevin Feige thinks it’s possible

As amazing as a crossover event between Marvel and DC would be, in the end the decision really comes down to the studio executives. And suspiciously it’s not something that Marvel boss Kevin Feige is willing to rule out. When asked about a potential crossover he said “Never say never”.

It would likely be one of the biggest movies of all time, if not the biggest. But for now fans will just have to wait and see. Based on the evidence above it’s not entirely out of the realms of possibility.
