Back in 2001, during the filming of Spider-man, which starred Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, four Spider-man suits mysteriously vanished from the set of the movie. Considering each suit was worth approximately $50,000, the studio decided to take the matter very seriously and offered a reward of $25,000 for the safe return of the suits.
What happened next?
The robbery resulted in an 18-month long investigation into the suits’ disappearance before they were eventually found. The costumes would eventually turn up in Los Angelas, New York and even Japan! The culprit? A security guard that was working on the set of the Sony film.
Not his first rodeo
After the security guard and a friend were arrested, more details came to light. As it turns out, this was not the first time he had abused his position.
It turned out that he had also stolen a costume from the set of Batman back in 1989. The value of that suit was even higher at a staggering $150,000!
The suits were all eventually recovered and returned to the studios from which they came. The security guard was jailed for the robbery and will likely find it difficult to get another job in the film industry.
Now you know. As always, thanks for reading.
