Jedi Master Yoda was first introduced to Star Wars fans back in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back. Since then, the character has gone on to treat fans to numerous wise quips and quotes over the years. “Judge me by my size, do you?” and “Do or do not, there is no try” are two of his most famous. He lived a long life but how did Yoda die?
How Yoda Died
Yoda died on the planet Dagobah in the year 4ABY from natural causes when he was 900 years old. He died right after telling Luke that there is another Skywalker, of course referring to his sister Leia. Due to being a super-powerful Force user, Yoda was able to retain his consciousness after his death and transition to become a Force Ghost.
There is no definitive answer from Star Wars canon sources on why, after 900 years, Yoda decided this was his time to pass on. Seemingly when the Universe needed him most. Our theory is that Yoda knew that Luke Skywalker needed to defeat his Father, Darth Vader, by himself. Perhaps Luke was able to use the death of Master Yoda to help channel the Force within himself. Yoda was one of the wisest beings in the Universe after all and could have known this was the only way.
Yoda’s Final Words
Before he died, Yoda had some important words for Luke Skywalker about the Dark Side, his Father and Emperor Palpatine.
Remember, a Jedi’s strength flows from the Force. Everywhere. Anger, fear, aggression, the dark side are they. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Do not underestimate the powers of the Emperor, or suffer your father’s fate you will.
When gone am I, the last of the Jedi you will be. Luke, the Force runs strong in your family, passing on what you have learned. There is another Skywalker.
