Since the original Shazam! film was first announced as an entry in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), fans have been clamouring for a team-up between Zachary Levi’s Billy Batson and Henry Cavill’s Superman. While we did get a teaser of the Man of Steel during the closing moments of Levi’s first film, Cavill did not reprise his role for the cameo, with the short scene not revealing Superman’s face.

However, while this cameo was a small nod to the character, the brief appearance has fans clamouring for more of a traditional Superman/Shazam team up, with both Levi and Cavill sharing the spotlight together. While an appearance from Cavill in a future Shazam! movie is something that has yet to be confirmed, rumours have started to gain traction due to an Instagram post from the Man of Steel star.
In the post, the star states he is travelling to America for work and has dyed his hair back to the same colour he sports throughout the DCEU. While Shazam! Fury of the Gods filming began in May, fans have held out hope that the Man of Steel will join forces with Shazam. However, if Swedish filmmaker David F. Sandberg’s (director of the upcoming film) comments are anything to go by, fans should not hold their breath.

During a Q&A on his personal Instagram account, the Swedish filmmaker offered fans the chance to ask him questions about the film. One of the questions asked was whether Superman would be appearing in the film, which the director answered in Swedish. Unfortunately for fans, the Swedish translation reads “You will be so disappointed when you translate this.” While this is not a complete denial of the Man of Steel making an appearance, it seems unlikely that Superman will join forces with Billy Batson.
It is unclear what the future holds for Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman in the DCEU, as DC Comics have plans to reboot the character with a film written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by J.J. Abrams. According to sources, the film is also searching for a black director and black lead actor to portray Clark Kent in a new take on the character. This news suggests that DC are shifting their focus away from Cavill’s portrayal of the character, however DC have showcased with their handling of Batman that the multiverse can allow them to have multiple versions of the same character.
While this news is going to disappoint fans, DC fans have a lot to look forward to in the DCEU, with films such as The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Batman and The Flash all due for release in the coming years. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently in production and scheduled to release in theatres on June 2nd, 2023 in the US.
