Armor Wars was just one of the Marvel Studios projects that was announced back in December 2020 at Disney’s Investors day. Since then not much has been officially revealed about the Disney Plus series but we’ve managed to piece together some clues to give us an insight as to what direction the series could take.
What is Armor Wars?

In the past the Marvel Cinematic Universe has used Marvel Comics‘ storylines more as a form of inspiration for its narrative rather than a direct retelling of stories. However, in phase 4 that seems to be changing. With the introduction of the Disney Plus TV shows, Marvel seem to be leaning into the source material more than ever before. This was especially evident as Wanda became the Scarlet Witch in WandaVision and Sam Wilson became Captain America in the Falcon and The Winter Soldier. Both matching up pretty closely with the comic book versions.
Given this information we can assume that Armor Wars the series will make use of the story that has already been told over the course of seven comic book issues published by Marvel Comics between the years 1987-1988. In the comics Tony Stark discovers that his Iron Man technology has fallen into the wrong hands, leading to disastrous results. Obviously the TV series won’t be able to follow the exact same storyline given that *spoiler alert* Tony Stark is dead. That doesn’t mean he won’t have a huge influence on the series however. Expect Iron Man to be an ever-bearing presence on the main character James Rhodes/War Machine, in the same manner as he was for Peter Parker in Spiderman: Far From Home.
Will Iron Man be in Armor Wars?

Although it’s not impossible, don’t expect to see Robert Downey Jr. make an appearance in Armor Wars. At least not a current version. His contract is finished at Marvel and he has pretty much fanned the flames on returning to the MCU in every interview he has given since Avengers Endgame was released. We are almost guaranteed however to be given lots of flashback scenes with the character.
Disney CEO Bob Chapek was recently asked about the return of Iron Man and here is what he had to say:
Well, tell your Marvel fan that we’ve got a series called Armor Wars coming up starring Don Cheadle as War Machine, I think that will probably scratch the itch fans have for more Iron Man.
Disney CEO – Bob Chapek
Safe to say then we can expect a lot of Iron Man tech, suits of armor and wise-cracking jokes.
James Rhodes taking center stage

One of the greatest aspects of the Marvel TV series’ we’ve seen so far is that it really gives previously overshadowed characters a chance to shine. We’ve seen truly emotional moments from the likes of WandaVision, Falcon and The Winter Soldier and most recently Loki. Given that Armor Wars lead Don Cheadle is an Oscar winning actor I’m expecting this series to surpass all expectations and really scratch that Iron Man that Bob Chapek spoke about.
We still don’t have an official release date for Marvel’s Armor Wars series but as soon as we do we’ll make sure to share it with you right here on Geeks Gonna Geek. As always, thanks for reading.
