Ms Marvel Powers

Ms. Marvel Powers: Why Marvel have changed them for the MCU

Marvel have officially released the first full trailer for Ms. Marvel which also revealed the series release date on Disney+ as June 8th. The story will follow Kamala Khan, a 16-year old Pakistani-American growing up in Jersey City. However, based on the trailer, the series appears to be changing her powers from Marvel comics.

What are Ms. Marvel’s powers in the comics?

In the comics, Kamala Khan gets her powers when she is exposed to a cloud of Terrigen Mists. Because of her Inhuman heritage (which she is not aware of) Kamala begins to display super powers. These new found powers make her a polymorph and allow her to stretch and expand her body to extreme lengths. She often uses this to create giant fists to hit her enemies with. This is something that anyone that has played Marvel’s Avengers video game by Square Enix will know.

What will Ms. Marvel’s Powers be in the MCU?

Based on the trailer, Marvel are about to completely change Kamala Khan’s powers. First off, it looks like the source of her new found powers will be some sort of cosmic bracelet. This bracelet exists in the comics as a Khan family heirloom, however it is never established as a power source in any way.

Whilst wearing the bracelet in the trailer, Ms. Marvel is seen projecting purple energy in the form of fists and a shield. It even allows her to walk on air.

Why are Marvel changing Kamala Khan’s powers?

There are two main reasons why Marvel are changing Ms. Marvel’s powers. The first is so that she is more closely aligned with her co-stars in The Marvels. A movie which will star Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel alongside Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and Teyonah Paris’ Monica Rambeau. It makes sense that Marvel would want all three characters to have similar power levels. With Captain Marvel being one of the most powerful characters in the MCU, it wouldn’t make sense for Ms. Marvel to just be stretchy.

The second reason for the power change is likely due to the fact that a more well known polymorph will soon be making his way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. None other than Mister Fantastic himself, Reed Richards. No actor has yet been confirmed for the role but it’s now only a matter of time. Introducing two characters with very similar abilities so close to each other doesn’t appear to be something Marvel want to do. And understandably so.

Ms. Marvel will be available to stream on Disney+ on June 8th, 2022. As always, thanks for reading.
