Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to loom closer as the days go on, with more details being dropped by the day. Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of a number of characters from across the multiverse, including Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Tom Hardy’s Venom and Jamie Foxx’s Electro. However, the most exciting addition to the film is by far Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn aka the Green Goblin.
While fans had seen glimpses of the character from afar in both the first trailer and promotional posters, the recently released second trailer for the film gives fans their first look at the Goblin up close and personal. Dafoe’s iconic green suit is back in action for the first time in nearly 20 years, with many fans treating the reveal as more exciting than the reveal of Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus in the first trailer.
Green Goblin is back!
Dafoe’s appearance is the most exciting due to a number of factors, with the first one being that the character has not been seen as the Goblin in nearly 20 years. His performance in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man is one of the best supervillain performances to date and helped put comic book properties on the map. Dafoe’s portrayal of Norman Osborn was intimidating, iconic and brilliant, so seeing the character enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be intriguing.
As the second trailer showcased, Doc Ock seems to be playing more of a reluctant ally role in the film, aiding Holland’s Peter Parker in his quest to stop the villains. This leads to the intriguing prospect that the Goblin may lead the multiversal Sinister Six instead of Ock. Seeing Goblin team up with other villains will be interesting, as Norman is not exactly known to be a team player. This could potentially lead to some interesting interactions between the villains and lead to the audience seeing a new side of Goblin that they have not seen (as a leader).
This will also present a new dynamic between Goblin and a much younger Spider-Man. While Holland’s Parker has taken on many villains, including Vulture and Mysterio, he is not prepared for someone as vicious as the Green Goblin. Goblin has showcased in previous films and comics that he is willing to target Parker’s family and it seems from the trailer that he may be doing so again, with a goblin bomb seemingly in the same location as Aunt May.
The second trailer also showcases a secondary Goblin wearing goggles and a different suit. From closer inspection, it seems that this Goblin is Dafoe as well, meaning that the character will likely receive a suit upgrade throughout the film, making the character even more deadly.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was shaping up to be an exciting film even without the Goblin, now the film will bring back the nostalgia with his first appearance in 20 years. Fans can only hope that the rumours of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield joining the film are true, granting us one last encounter between Dafoe’s Goblin and Maguire’s Spider-Man.
