There are spoilers ahead for WandaVision episode 4. Please turn back if you haven’t seen the episode yet. Here is why we think The Fantastic Four will be SWORD agents in the MCU.
WandaVision episode 4 introduces us to SWORD. The Sentient Weapon Observation Response Division. The name just rolls off the tongue doesn’t it? During the early scenes of the episode we hear Monica Rambeau mention their budding Astronaut program “not having many volunteers”. If you’re familiar with the Fantastic Four you will be aware that they get their super powers when a space exploration trip goes wrong. Why has the program not had many volunteers? Have missions gone wrong in the past? Have people gone missing?
We know that SWORD deals with threats from space. We also know that they’ve had multiple space exploration trips in the past. It’s perfectly logical to assume that the Fantastic Four will end up being crew members from one of those trips. Perhaps they were a group of volunteers on a space trip when The Snap happened? This would explain why they haven’t been around in the MCU up to now. Alternatively, they may not have formed as a team yet. Perhaps we will see them as future volunteers in this program. Could we see them as a group of volunteers from SWORD that go to space on a rescue mission after the events of The Snap are reversed?
Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR)
In the same episode we also hear the term CMBR which stands for Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. This is going be an important term for the MCU going forward. Cosmic radiation is what gives The Fantastic Four their powers. It also seems to be important to the events of WandaVision to an extent we haven’t fully understood yet. A certain devourer of worlds, Galactus, is also a big fan of the stuff so expect to hear the term CMBR a lot more.
As usual with WandaVision we are left with more questions than answers but the questions are certainly interesting enough to keep us wanting more.
