Tony Stark famously likes to give his fellow Avengers nicknames. In Marvel‘s first Avengers movie, he famously refers to Hawkeye as Legolas, the famous archer from The Lord of the Rings. Stark doesn’t stop there though. He calls Trevor Slattery “Ringo” as a reference to the Beatles member and calls Ant-man “Thumbelina”, referring to the superhero’s miniature size. Perhaps the most famous nickname of all though is his nickname for Thor, which is Point Break.
Why does Tony Stark call Thor Point Break?
Thor is called Point Break because of his uncanny resemblance to Patrick Swayze in the 1991 movie, Point Break. In the film, Swayze has long blonde hair, much like Thor in The Avengers.

Point Break is a movie about a group of robbers, who also happen to be surfers. The gang is infiltrated by federal agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) but when he falls in love with one of the female surfers close to the gang, it complicates matters.
There is even a callback to the “Point Break” nickname in Thor Ragnarok when the God of Thunder is guessing the activation password for the Quinjet, the vehicle he needs to escape the planet Sakaar. He hilariously tries “Strongest Avenger” and “Son of Odin” before eventually guessing it correctly. And it turns out to be, you guessed it, Point Break.
When Tony and Thor meet again in Avengers Endgame, Stark refers to the Asgardian as Lebowski. A nickname the billionaire bestows on Thor due to the weight he has gained and his dishevelled appearance. Funnily enough, the actor that plays that character in The Big Lebowski is Jeff Bridges. The same actor that plays Obadiah Stane in Iron Man. The multiverse explains it I guess?
So there you have it, that’s why Thor is called Point Break by Tony Stark.
